K&M has a strong history in the wind power industry. Over the last decade, K&M has developed expertise, created manufacturing processes and invested in sophisticated equipment in order to meet the needs of this evolving industry. Today, major players such as Clipper Windpower and Gamesa trust K&M to manufacture top quality parts for their wind turbine products.
K&M's involvement in the wind power industry was showcased in a PBS documentary called "Michigan's Green Energy Economy."
A major wind power turbine OEM who had recently set up manufacturing operations in the United States was seeking a reliable supplier to machine 36,000 pound bed plates. After collaboration, K&M was able to fully develop the first part, complete with Faro laser inspection, in a matter of a couple of weeks. Subsequent development efforts ramped up production to two per week within the first month, three per week soon following, and four per week within the first two months.
According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, wind energy is one of the fastest-growing forms of electricity generation in the world. The wind energy industry installed over 5,000 megawatts of capacity in 2007 and will exceed that number in 2008. The U.S. wind power sector now provides just over 1% of electricity supply at almost 17,000 megawatts and industry experts predict that wind energy could ultimately provide 20% of the nation's energy needs. K&M meets these needs by continuing to invest in equipment and process development.
